In this section, students are introduced to the three most common r-controlled vowel spellings: ER, AR, and OR. They will learn what an r-controlled syllable is, review a keyword for each spelling, and begin building awareness of how the vowel sound is changed when followed by the letter r. This foundation will support the reading, spelling, and writing activities that follow.
Learner should be familiar with basic closed syllables
Should also know Vowel-Consonant-e (VCe) syllables, such as ride, bone, or cute
Some prior experience with sounding out CVC and CCVC words is recommended
No prior knowledge of r-controlled vowels is required — this pack supports review or first-time practice
Requires access to a printer for worksheets and visual charts
Optional access to a device for online games and a teaching video on -er spelling best practices
