This section is an introduction to the course, which is Part Three of the Essay Apprentice Writing System.
Part One: Paragraph Structure, Topic, and Main Idea includes handouts and writing exercises that teach you to identify the basic structure of a paragraph, how to write and identify the topic and main idea, and how to differentiate between the two.
Part Two: Topic Sentences includes handouts and writing exercises that teach you what a topic sentence is and how to use one, practice writing topic sentences, and an exercise in identifying topic sentences in context.
Part Three: Supporting Details includes handouts and writing exercises that teach you all about supporting details, including identifying supporting details, striking unnecessary details, and creating supporting ideas to enhance your writing.
Part Four: Concluding Sentences includes handouts and writing exercises that teach you all about writing concluding sentences for your paragraphs, plus extensive practice writing concluding sentences of various types.
Part Five: Sentence Combining & Varying Sentence Beginnings includes handouts and writing exercises that will have you learn and practice combining all types of sentences and varying your sentence beginnings for variety and depth.
Part Six: Paragraph Types, Summarizing, & Paraphrasing includes handouts and writing exercises introducing the different types of paragraphs, recognizing paragraph types, summarizing versus paraphrasing, sample essays for summarizing practice, and paraphrasing practice exercises
The following is an optional course exam for those who want to test their skills at the end of this course.
A final course wrap-up and acknowledgment of completion.
Students should have a basic or better understanding of the English language. All videos, handouts, and activities are in Standard American English.
While this is Part Three of the Essay Apprentice Writing System, you do not need to have completed Part Two to complete this course.
