Episode 2 ! Saying Goodbye, Welcoming Hello: Debbie Hayes on Little Bob’s Final Days & New Beginnings

In part two of our end-of-life series, original host Debbie Hayes opens her heart about “Little Bob” the joyful pup who taught her how to notice quality-of-life changes, make the hardest call with love, and honor a pet’s passing with dignity. Debbie shares practical red flags (stairs, bed jumps, appetite, “small-space” seeking), the peace she found with at-home euthanasia and aquamation, and simple memorial ideas that help healing. We close with a hopeful turn: meeting Tate, the family’s new kitty, and a reminder that unconditional love like our pets give us guides both farewells and fresh starts.

Episode 1 ! Saying Goodbye with Love: Dr. Kelly Barrett on Gentle End-of-Life Care for Pets

In our 1st episode, We sit down with Dr. Kelly Barrett, DVM, founder of Kindred Spirits Pet Services in Tucson, AZ. For a compassionate, practical conversation about end-of-life care for our animal family members. We explore what makes in-home euthanasia so peaceful for pets and people, how families can create meaningful final moments (favorite foods, music, being with littermates/kids), and ways to advocate for “a little more time” when you’re processing tough news. Dr. Barrett shares grief-healing ideas (talk it out, keep mementos, simple ceremonies) and resources like quality-of-life consults/assessments and the “Tess’s Tributes” pet-memorial community. You’ll also hear the incredible rescue stories of her dogs, Rue and Quill, reminding us why this work matters.

If you or someone you love are facing this decision, this episode offers clarity, comfort, and next steps.

Communal Aquamation

I felt so comfortable knowing that my pet's remains were going to be cared for by Paula and Cholla Afterlife. Just knowing that his last time on earth, even though after he passed, was going to be with peaceful water to break down his body.

Communal aquamation

Individual or private aquamation may not be a cost effective option for some pet owners, but we know that money does not equal love, so we want to make sure that all pets and their people are well cared for after the pet's passing. That's why we offer communal aquamation through our Compassion Package. We place multiple animals into a single cradle to go on their journey to the Bridge together.

The Compassion Package includes:

  • A Sprinkling Ceremony so you can sprinkle dried herbs and flowers on your pet to help them have a safe and happy journey to the Bridge. This option is only if you personally bring your pet to Cholla Afterlife or when we pick up your pet from the location of your choice;
  • Communal aquamation for your pet;
  • A handmade clay paw print
  • You can add onto the package for a fee a small amount of the communal group's powdered remains in an XS glass vial (teaspoon of communal powdered remains) or small urn (1/4 cup communal powdered remains).

We will spread the rest of the powdered remains from your pet and the communal group in the memorial garden at the nonprofit organization Old Souls Animal Rescue and Retirement Home.

Mushrooms, Mushing, and Motivation: Adventures on the World of Ability Podcast

Welcome to another lively and heartfelt episode this weeks special guest Sabrina, “the Lifestyle Promoter,” returned to share wisdom from her journey shifting from corporate America’s hustle to a life filled with travel, photography, and extraordinary adventures. Sabrina spoke candidly about how American work culture often neglects the individual, compared to European approaches that appreciate downtime and renewal. Her story took a pivotal turn when her doctor urged her to quit her draining job, ultimately sparking a major life pivot toward self-care, exploration, and pursuing her true passions.

This episode’s main adventure was Sabrina’s memorable mushing experience in Alaska. Expecting a traditional Iditarod sled experience, she instead found herself on a touristy sleigh ride, which proved to be a blessing in disguise. Sabrina’s resilience shone through; when initially discouraged and quoted an outrageous price for the genuine sledding adventure, she didn’t back down. With resourcefulness, she found her way into a real training run with seasoned sled dogs in the Tetons, without breaking the bank and while facing the challenges of snow, cold, and self doubt.

Sabrina’s detailed storytelling painted vivid scenes: gearing up with high-tech clothing, learning to guide the dog team, bonding with the lead and co-lead pups, and racing through untouched snowy wilderness. Along the way, she addressed common misconceptions about sled dogs, emphasizing their enthusiasm and genuine love for running and working with their human companions.

5 Summer Heat Safety Tips Every Pet Owner Should Know

Keep walks short – Stick to early morning or late evening when it's cooler. Hot pavement can burn paws!

Hydration is key – Always have fresh, cool water available—indoors and out.

Never leave pets in cars – Even a few minutes can be deadly in extreme heat.

Provide shade – Whether it's a tree, umbrella, or pop-up canopy, make sure pets have a cool spot to rest.

Watch for signs of heatstroke – Excessive panting, drooling, weakness, or confusion? Get them to a vet immediately.

Healing With Mushrooms: How Medicinal Mushrooms Are Transforming Pet and Human Wellness

In this episode of the World of Pets podcast, co-hosts Emily Gomer and Anthony welcome special guest Debbie Hayes, founder of DebsPets.com, to explore the power of medicinal mushrooms—specifically Coriolus versicolor, also known as turkey tail. Debbie shares compelling stories about the immune-boosting effects of these mushrooms in both pets and humans, including how they helped a dog avoid surgery, a man reduce his need for oxygen, and a woman manage diabetes.

The conversation also covers:

  • What sets Debbie’s products apart: human-grade ingredients, no preservatives, and proprietary extraction methods
  • Real-life health transformations in pets and people
  • How medicinal mushrooms are used safely (no THC, no psychoactive effects)
  • How the mushrooms are sustainably sourced and grown in the U.S. in controlled environments

The episode closes with updates on Project Die Hard, a nonprofit supporting veterans, and a preview of next week’s guest, Sabrina Morris, who will continue the mushroom wellness discussion.

Earlier today, a dad gave his son a short time-out—a few quiet minutes to think. But before that time was up, someone had already come to offer comfort. It was his dog—his loyal buddy, his gentle protector.

The dog walked over without hesitation and settled beside him, leaning his head gently on the boy’s shoulder, as if to say, “I’ve got you. You’re not alone.” No judgment. No questions. Just pure, unwavering love.

Moments like this remind us that dogs aren’t just pets. They’re family. They’re silent guardians, a source of peace when emotions run high. In their world, mistakes don’t change love—and no one ever has to face hard moments alone.

Have you ever witnessed a pet offering comfort at just the right time?

  • Go through your furever family member's toys. Throw away any items that are no longer safe.
  • Maintain your pet-friendly home. Keep cords and toxins secure from your four-legged friends. This includes phone chargers.
  • Verify when vaccinations are due and schedule an appointment to update if they are due.
  • Check collars to ensure tags are secure and numbers are current. We sometimes forget to update this information when we move or change numbers.

HOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL PET DAY

  • Take supplies to those pets in shelters.
  • Help a friend with pets who is recovering from an illness.
  • Adopt a pet.
  • Give your pets extra love with a bath and rub down.
  • Use #NationalPetDay on social media.

NATIONAL PET DAY HISTORY

Celebrity Pet Lifestyle Expert & Animal Welfare Advocate Colleen Paige founded the day in 2005.

  • Routine checkups, vaccinations, and medical care when sick.
  • Love, affection, social interaction.

Introduction to our newest non profit Beads of Courage
Introduction to our newest non profit Beads of Courage

Meet Jacob Carter,  Top Dog (Owner) Orange Paws

My passion for animals has defined my journey, both personally and professionally. As the founder of Orange Paws, I have the privilege of collaborating with animal welfare organizations and offering solutions that support pets dealing with inflammatory issues. But first, a bit about my non-profit work:

I am honored to serve on the Board of Directors for the Humane Society of Southern Arizona (HSSA). Supporting their mission aligns perfectly with my dedication to improving the lives of pets and our community. At HSSA, we work tirelessly toward a future where every pet has a loving home.  www.HSSAZ.org

In addition, I am proud to be the Community Engagement and Special Events Coordinator for Beads of Courage, an arts-in-medicine organization dedicated to supporting children and teens coping with serious illnesses. Over the past 13 years, I’ve had the pleasure of contributing to this incredible cause in a variety of roles.  www.BeadsofCourage.org

I also actively support local initiatives like “Tucson Action Team” and “Spotlight! Pima Animal Shelters and Rescues,” as well as LGBTQIA+ organizations, including the Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation (SAAF) and the international group “Rainbow Railroad.”

At the heart of everything I do is my unwavering love for animals. Whether it’s through our Orange Paws products or my involvement with various non-profits, I am deeply honored to contribute to improving the lives of animals.

Not your Typical Pet ! Tip of the day !
Not your Typical Pet ! Tip of the day !

Pets Beyond the Traditional

When we think of pets and animals, the first image that often comes to mind is the classic companionship of a cat or a dog. These loyal creatures have become synonymous with family life and affection, embodying qualities of trust, loyalty, and unconditional love. Their wagging tails or soft purring often provide comfort after a long day, making them beloved members of households worldwide.

However, our affection for animals as pets extends beyond the traditional.

 The Advantage of Owning Horses

Owning a horse offers unique advantages that go beyond companionship:

1. Sense of Freedom and Adventure: Riding provides a therapeutic exercise for both physical and mental health. It encourages an active lifestyle and connects owners with the great outdoors.

2. Development of Skills: Engaging in disciplines like dressage, jumping, and endurance riding builds skills in focus, discipline, and perseverance.

3. Profound Bonding: Horses build deep bonds with their owners, rooted in mutual respect and understanding.

TIP: Spend consistent time with your horse to strengthen your bond and enhance communication through regular grooming, riding, and simply being present in their environment.

Don't Let Your Pets Eat This

Weekly show with Debbie HayesSponsorshttp://debspets.comhttps://thegreatdiscovery.com/dnhayesThe World of Ability Podcast Network

PODCAST EPISODE

In the latest episode of "The World of Pets," the host begins by emphasizing the importance of providing both longevity and quality in the lives of our pets. The episode opens with a somber announcement: the co-host, David, has recently lost his beloved pet, Payton Pooh. This poignant moment sets the stage for the central theme of the show—how we can continue to care for our pets and make decisions that prioritize their well-being.

The episode features guest Kurt Weeks, who joins the conversation to discuss pet safety, particularly as it relates to choosing appropriate toys for pets. With the holiday season approaching, Kurt underscores the critical need to be cautious about the gifts we buy for our animals. He shares a concerning anecdote about toys that, despite being marketed as safe, pose significant risks due to their internal components. He advises pet owners to be vigilant and choose toys that do not pose choking hazards or contain harmful materials.

Beyond toys, the discussion delves into maintaining pet health through nutrition. Kurt highlights the benefits of using natural materials like untreated hemp rope for play and shares insights into the dangers of chemically treated toys. Emphasis is also placed on the nutritional needs of pets, including the importance of minerals for their overall health. Natural alternatives like antlers and specialized biscuits are recommended, offering a digestible, mineral-rich option for pets.

Towards the end of the show, listeners are reminded to consider what is truly beneficial and healthy for their pets, especially during the holiday buying season. The episode closes with a nod to additional resources and educational content available online, with an invitation to explore courses on pet health and nutrition. This episode makes a compelling case for thoughtful and informed pet care, encouraging listeners to prioritize their furry friends’ health and happiness above all.

Pet Cameras
Pet Cameras

Pet cameras have truly revolutionized the way pet owners interact with and care for their furry companions, offering a sense of connection and security even when apart. These innovative devices have become an essential tool for many pet parents, thanks to their advanced features and ease of use.

One of the standout features of modern pet cameras is the integration of two-way audio. This allows owners to communicate with their pets in real-time, providing comfort and reassurance to anxious animals who might be missing their human companions. Hearing a familiar voice often helps reduce pet stress and can prevent unwanted behaviors that might arise from separation anxiety.

In addition to audio communication, many pet cameras come equipped with treat dispensers. This interactive component not only makes checking in on pets a fun experience but also reinforces positive behaviors by rewarding them. Treat dispensers can be remotely controlled via smartphone apps, allowing owners to give their pets a little treat even when they're miles away.

Today's pet cameras often include high-definition video capabilities and night vision, ensuring that pet owners can see their pets clearly at all times of day or night. With wide-angle lenses and motion detection, these cameras cover significant room areas and alert owners when unusual activity is detected, offering peace of mind that their pets are safe.

Moreover, some advanced models come with the ability to record and save video clips, which is especially useful for capturing adorable or amusing pet behaviors to share with friends and family. The ability to monitor pet activities throughout the day can also be a valuable tool in pet training, helping owners track progress or identify areas that require attention.

In a world where our pets hold a special place in our hearts, pet cameras offer a window into their world, allowing us to be a part of their daily adventures even when we're not physically present. Whether for peace of mind or pure enjoyment, these devices are becoming an indispensable tool for pet lovers everywhere.

Do you use a pet camera? We'd love to see your furry friend's funniest or cutest moments! Share your videos with us in the comments! 🐶🐱📹✨

Friday Tip of The Day
Friday Tip of The Day

Regularly washing your pet's food and water bowls is crucial for their health. Unwashed bowls can harbor harmful bacteria like Salmonella and E.coli, leading to gastrointestinal issues such as vomiting and diarrhea. Mold growth can also occur, posing additional health risks. To prevent this, clean your pet's bowls daily with hot, soapy water or place them in the dishwasher, ensuring they're thoroughly dried before the next use. This simple habit helps keep your furry friend healthy and happy.

Cherie from Our Fury Friends Training shares our tip of the week

A great place to start with training a young dog or rescue is to get them really good at paying attention to you.

When you say their name or do a little kissy sound etc...every time you do that, use your reward marker "yes" or a clicker at the moment of eye contact, however brief, and give them a yummy morsel.

Practice in all different situations, and locations, and distance away...slowly increasing distractions over the weeks.

Then you can build upon this with your obedience training ... on the foundation of being connected with your dog... And having taught your dog that connecting with you is a rewardable behavior even if they are distracted!!

🎶Baby, It's Cold Outside!🎶

Tips for pet treatment in cold weather

--Leave your pets outside for only brief periods of time. Towel dry them when they come in.

--"Dress" them for the occasion if they are going to out a while. Booties are appropriate for the feet, or apply cream to protect their paws outside.

--If they have to be outside for an extended time, but not overnight, provide an enclosure that is small enough to warm them with their body heat and large enough for them to move around.

--Make sure their water doesn't run out and that will cause their to get to stick to it in the case of freezing.

--Leave nutritious food, better to use dry.

--Antifreeze is dangerous for pets. Don't leave any partially open jars or leave any spills on the garage floor

--Don't leave them in a vehicle that doesn't have the heat on.

Christmas is over
Christmas is over

Saying goodbye to my Christmas "pets". There are more of them, but the others are taking a nap.

A little background on these happy mice is in order. They originated in Meredith, New Hampshire. As far as I know, there is still a museum and shop at their place of origin. Two of these three say Annalee Dolls 1965. They were made in NH. But the third one, the one with the packages, says designed in Meredith, NH and on the other side of the label says "Made in China". I'm not sure what year they made the switch.

Next Christmas, I will give a more comprehensive photo.

I love my pet Annalee Dolls mice!
