Phosphatidylcholine is one of the fatty acids critical for our cellular health and brain function.

The choline part of this fatty acid is used by our brains to help with the signals that travel between our brain cells. When we’re low in these fats it’s much more difficult for our brains to  function at the right level, which usually causes slower thoughts, poor memory, and learning issues.

Our bodies can make some Phosphatidylcholine, however we need to get most of it from foods like beef, eggs, oysters, and certain seeds, like sunflower seeds.

So what does this fatty acid actually do?

One of the primary uses of this fatty acid is to maintain the health and strength of our brain cells. Without it our brain cells will lose integrity, deteriorate, and eventually die. 

Phosphatidylcholine is critical for boosting brain health and maintaining proper function.

Here’s a deeper look at some the ‘science stuff’:

  • Phosphatidylcholine is needed for long-term memory. The breakdown of Phosphatidylcholine is used to create multiple other fatty acids.
  • These other fatty acids are used to move the signals between your brain cells to improve messaging between your cells, which is critical for learning and memory.
  • Phosphatidylcholine helps repair our brain cells and is a major component of brain cell membranes.
  • If there is not enough choline available to maintain brain cell health, and to make the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, brain cell function breaks down. This is when you experience brain fog, poor memory and slow decision making. 

Ultimately, if brain cell function continues to break down without repair, it usually leads to neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s, and other motor neuron disorders.

Researchers even discovered that Phosphatidylcholine also plays an important role in improving the health of the mucus lining in our intestines. When levels were too low, the study found an increase in inflammatory bowel disorders.

Benefits most people notice:

Many people that are supplementing with Phosphatidylcholine often report feeling like it helps wipe out brain fog, improve working memory, and seems to boost alertness.

While some others mentioned they feel it helps them prevent anxiety attacks or panic attacks.

This one is another one to add to the list. Take a long look at the little paper cup you find in your hand next time you buy a coffee or tea from your favorite chain coffee shop or restaurant.

They seem so innocent, so normal, so festive especially around this time of year. What could be wrong with such a simple product used almost daily by a very large part of our country?

After learning this I felt shocked, sad, mad, then back to sad again. Here is where it gets ugly.

This should be common knowledge, but similar to common sense... Common knowledge isn't so common either.

I was fooled by this too and didn't even realize until recently. It's safe to say we all know what happens when paper gets wet, right!? So why doesn't a paper coffee/tea cup fall apart within seconds or a minute of exposure to your favorite drink of choice?

Gross!!! These cups are made with a thin lining of a type of plastic. You don't notice it, you can't see it, but let this sink...

If liquid ruins any other paper product instantly, then this plastic lining or barrier is the only thing in between your pumpkin spice latte and the paper material of the cup.

As shocking as this is, some people will ask, "what's the big deal?" Well a research study showed that within 15 minutes that ultra-thin plastic lining can release up to 25,000 microplastic particles into your favorite hot drink.

These plastic particles breakdown from microplastics into nanoplastics. This is the part that becomes terrifying. The nanoplastics can get deep into our bodies. They are able to pass through cell membranes and get into our cells where it is much more difficult to remove them from the body.

I'm sure we all agree this is very bad for us. What does this really mean besides the obvious? The response to this in our bodies is inflammation, disrupting cell functions, and even cell mutations.

We have no way to naturally breakdown these manufactured materials, so even with small exposure over time this particles are capable of invading deep into our tissues and cells.

The more layers of the onion we are peeling back... its becoming more clear. We are meant to thrive in vibrant health and happiness, however these challenges are bringing us to place of greater awareness.

While all of this is happening, we still have the opportunity to make better choices. It can be as simple as only ordering a hot drink in a real mug, eating with a real fork or spoon, on a real plate. All things made with non-plastic material and - fingers crossed! - non-toxic materials.

So do yourself and your family a massive favor. Skip the paper cups, skip the plastic to-go boxes, or at least wait until the food is cool enough not to unleash an army of plastic chemicals and particles into your late night snack or "left over" lunch the next day.

Many of us have consumed L-Theanine without ever realizing it.  It's one of the ingredients in this extremely popular drink.

That’s right! I’m talking about green tea. Of course, our ancestors weren’t aware that the leaves of their favorite drink contained a phenomenal brain boosting phytochemical.

L-Theanine is one of the primary reasons that most people feel really calm and collected after enjoying a delicious cup of green tea.

What’s so special about this “magical” ingredient? The studies done on L-Theanine showed that it can help lower blood pressure, allow you to feel rejuvenated and relaxed, plus it’s very effective at boosting your ability to think, focus and improve your mood.

​​Here are a few easy ways you can get more L-Theanine in your life. Thankfully, it really is as easy as getting yourself some good quality green tea. As always, I recommend organic, but may not be necessary depending on where the tea was grown.

The second way is through supplementation. You can easily get an L-Theanine supplement or you can find herbal brain boost blends, which often include L-Theanine plus other ingredients for enhancing brain function.

Here’s a larger breakdown of a lot of the benefits discovered so far:

L-Theanine has the amazing ability to energize you without energy crashing later. And it can help calm you without putting you to sleep.

L-Theanine was found to have some anti-anxiety properties too. Even though green tea can have as much caffeine as some coffees. It doesn’t seem to “push” you the same way coffee does. We can thank the ingredient L-Theanine for this.

L-Theanine is a naturally occurring amino acid, it is considered very safe. As mentioned, humans have been consuming green tea for thousands of years already.

That being said, it appears to be effective at decreasing blood pressure, so you have to be cautious if your blood pressure is already on the low side or if you’re using blood pressure medication.

It's probably safe to say everyone has heard of this one. 

Vitamin C is well known for helping the immune system, but there is a lot more to it.

There is a lot of Vitamin C available in foods, but nowadays the vitamin and mineral levels in our modern food is so much less than it once was. 

So you might find that you need a lot more to help your body heal faster.

You will be surprised to see the amazing benefits of Vitamin C. It helps your body maintain and improve the health of your skin. 

Our bodies actually use Vitamin C to make collagen.

If your Vitamin C levels are too low, you could struggle to absorb iron from meats and vegetables. 

If dealing with low iron (anemia), you might consider increasing your vitamin C to help your body get more iron from your food.

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant also. It helps your body prevent damage from free radicals, toxic chemicals, and pollution.

Now again, Vitamin C supplements are not created equal either. There are multiple types of Vitamin C available, but you will find Ascorbic Acid and Calcium Ascorbate. 

Technically, neither are 100% natural, because nature doesn't isolate vitamins in foods.

Personally, the version that worked best for me is Calcium Ascorbate, which I found easier on my digestion and you get some calcium too which seems to make it easier to absorb.

As always, please remember to do what is best for your body. Some people do great with supplements and sometimes our bodies will only digest a small fraction of the nutrients in a supplement.

Adrenal fatigue occurs when your adrenal glands (small organs that sit above your kidneys) are overtaxed by prolonged or chronic stress, leading them to struggle with regulating cortisol and other essential hormones.

One of those favorite foods loved by people all over the world.

Personally, I love dairy! It seems to make almost everything taste more delicious from butter, to yogurt, to the silky heavy cream, and beautiful cheeses.

These days especially, if you choose to eat dairy, it has to be from healthy, grass fed, pasture raised animals, and "real" organic, if possible.

This might be more for those of us living in the U.S., because so many of the dairy cows here are pumped up with genetically engineered growth hormones, like rBST or rBGH, meaning they don't exist anywhere in nature.

Of course, the cows also get sick from the food they are fed that's full of cheap grains, soy, corn, and who knows what else, that they would never eat in nature. So this leads to pumping the animals full of antibiotics too.

Think about it... drinking or eating dairy from sick, "modified" animals, leads to sick people.
